talking point

you own your data

Would be nice, but unfortunately not true in the United States.

In the United States, you do not own your data in any meaningful way because there is no federal law saying that you do.

Once you bequeath your data to a company (mainly by accepting their terms of service in order to use the service), they can do what they want with it.

"Tech companies never 'own' your data, but you grant them unlimited licence, and with it, power, control, and the capacity to monetize it." -- Bianca Wylie
